Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has established a committee to evaluate the possibility of conducting in-house entrance exams for PhD admissions in Korean language, arts and aesthetics, and labour studies. This decision comes as these subjects are not covered under the University Grants Commission's (UGC) National Eligibility Test (NET), leaving the university to explore alternatives for admissions, according to officials on Tuesday.
The move is likely a one-time measure aimed at addressing the gap left by the absence of these subjects in the NET framework. With the current admission cycle set to conclude on December 4, uncertainty looms over admissions for these programmes, causing concern amongst prospective students.
The committee, led by Shoba Sivasankaran, Dean of the School of Language, held its first meeting on Monday and is expected to convene again soon to chart out a solution. Previously, JNU conducted its own entrance exams, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Entrance Examination (JNUEE), for admissions.
However, following the introduction of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP), JNU transitioned to admitting PhD candidates through UGC’s NET.
This year, the admissions process faced delays due to alleged irregularities in centrally conducted exams like UGC-NET JRF and CUET. The possibility of reinstating in-house exams raises logistical and financial concerns for the university, with officials citing limited resources and time constraints.

Alternatively, JNU could petition the UGC to add these subjects to the NET list, but this process is lengthy and may further delay admissions. Another option is to admit candidates through the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) programme, but this would exclude applicants who qualify solely through NET or are non-NET candidates. Read More
