England continued to assert dominance over New Zealand on Day 2 of the second Test as they finished the day on 378/5 leading New Zealand by 533 runs on Saturday, December 7 at Basin Reserve, Wellington. New Zealand began the day on 86/5 in 26 overs trailing by 194 runs as England continued the momentum from the opening day and dismissed Tom Blundell in the third over of the day who lost his stumps against Brydon Carse (4/46).
William ORourke was also dismissed in the same over for a 26-ball duck being trapped in front of the stumps which left the Kiwis on 96/7. Glenn Phillips (16*) and Nathan Smith (14) played a few strokes to take their team score to 125. However, all of their hopes for a comeback were shattered by Gus Atkinson (4/31) who picked up a hat-trick and dismissed Smith, Matt Henry and Tim Southee to bundle out New Zealand for 125.
As a result, England took a massive 155-run lead in the first innings but didn’t have a good start in the second innings as Matt Henry continued to torment Zak Crawley (8). After the early blow, Ben Duckett (92) and Jacob Bethell (96) forged a massive 187un partnership for the second wicket to take the lead past 300.
