Indian chocolate has carved a niche for itself in the international market, and one landmark achievement has cemented its presence. In a recent turn of events, Kochi-based farm-to-bar chocolate brand Paul and Mike won India's first-ever Gold at the International Chocolate Awards 2024. They won the competitive category of 'Milk Chocolate Enrobed Whole Fruit' with their innovative 'Milk Chocolate Coated Salted Capers'.
This marvelous creation perfectly captures innovation and sustainability. It carries Lilliput capers from the arid lands of Tuticorin with premium cacao grown in the lush Western Ghats. Capers are olive-like, having a lemony flavor so that they complement well with rich milk chocolate; they offer a taste with umami, saltiness, acidity, and sweetness.
Paul and Mike's products have been a result of three years of collaboration with Ishka Farms. Capers are picked and processed every day to capture the unique flavor of these buds, and salt comes from Tuticorin's salt pans, which are mineral- rich. That is very thoughtful of them, not to neglect either quality or sustainability.
Reflecting on the win, Vikas Temani, Head of Business at Paul and Mike, said, "Winning Gold at the International Chocolate Awards is a dream come true. This recognition places Indian chocolate on the global map, showcasing our dedication to representing the best of India's ingredients while pushing the boundaries of chocolate-making."
Paul and Mike have been talking since their debut. Their Gin & Ginger Chocolate went to number nine in the International Chocolate Awards World Finals 2023, thereby becoming the first chocolate of India to achieve a top 10 position. The brand focuses on farm-to-bar production in an ethical manner. Every stage-from selection of genetics to roasting and grinding-is handled with utmost care while dealing with the chocolate process.
