Shamla Hamza, who played the titular character in Feminist Fathima, recently spoke to us about the film’s success at the International Film Festival of Kerala and all the subsequent accolades that followed. “This year has been very kind to me. I had my daughter in January and was offered a role in Feminist Fathima (Feminichi Fathima) a few months later. I was very confused and wondered if I should take it up. It was my husband, Mohammed Salih, who supported me, asking me to take up the opportunity. Apart from the awards we won at the IFFK, the positive opinions from our favourite directors and artistes has proved to be very inspiring. It’s better to do a few films that make an impact rather than doing a lot of them."
When asked if she had concerns about doing her role, which addresses certain social issues, she says, “I didn’t think too much about it as I had the support of my family. Acting is a talent that I have and I am expressing it through the character. I don’t change as a person. Even people who have not seen the film messaged me asking why I am acting in such films, asking me to change my dressing style. They don’t have any right to say this. Also, more importantly, this film is not about one community. It could happen in any family. Fasil chose a community that he is familiar with.”
Shamla is mother to Lazin Zoe and was six months post partum when the filming happened. “My mother had been with me throughout the shoot. The crew was very helpful. They would make it convenient for me to take breaks, if necessary, to pacify my child.

She was not a cranky child either.” Speaking about how acting has impacted her life, she says, "I have not changed from who I am because I am an actor now. I appeared on stage as I am. If you want to be an actor, be an actor. If you want to be a pilot, do it. You don’t have to change who you are to do any of it." Read More
