Shubman Gill revealed his father’s hilarious reaction after the Indian skipper scored a magnificent 269 against England in the Birmingham Test on Thursday, 3 July. Despite a nervy start, Gill went on to smash 30 boundaries and three sixes in a marathon 387-ball innings, helping India post a formidable first-innings total of 587.
Following the close of play on Day 2, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared a video on their official Instagram handle in which Gill reacted to messages from his parents after the landmark knock.
"Well played, I enjoyed watching your batting, and my heart was at peace. You were batting like in your U-16 and U-19 days — I felt very proud," said Gill’s father in a voice message featured in the video.
“Felt amazing watching you bat, keep going, God bless you,” added his mother. Interestingly, Gill concluded the video by sharing a light-hearted moment that wasn't included in the voice notes, his father’s cheeky comment about the missed milestone. “It means a lot coming from him. But he also told me I missed my triple century. Hopefully, we'll end this match on a great note," Gill said.
PEOPLE THAT MATTER MOST FOR GILL
Indian captain Shubman Gill revealed that only two people truly matter to him when it comes to his cricket: his father and his best friend. He shared that their opinions are the only ones he genuinely cares about in his cricketing journey.
When it comes to his best friend, it is likely that he is referring to his fellow national teammate, Abhishek Sharma, who has been making his mark in the shortest format and is now the designated opener for the T20i side. The two have been pictured together for quite some time and it would not be surprised if he is the 'best friend' that he referred to.
