An NT scan measures the clear fluid-filled space at the back of the baby’s neck, called the nuchal translucency. In some babies, an increased thickness in this area may be associated with chromosomal conditions or congenital anomalies.
When Is the NT Scan Done?
The NT scan is usually performed between 11 weeks and 13 weeks 6 days of pregnancy, when the baby’s development allows accurate measurement.
Why Is the NT Scan Important?
The NT scan helps in:
- Assessing the risk of chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), Trisomy 18, and Trisomy 13
- Early detection of congenital heart defects
- Evaluating overall fetal growth and development
- Providing reassurance to parents when results are normal
Is the NT Scan Safe?
Yes, the NT scan is completely safe for both mother and baby. It uses sound waves and does not involve radiation.
