Chorao Island is not a hidden gem, and we say that because it’s literally an island that’s located just 11 km away from the capital city of Panjim. But even though it is so close to the bustling Panjim, Chorao has managed to keep the serene vibe about it. For those who can't do without sightseeing, Chorao Island is the place for them.
Here’s what makes Chorao Island unique and popular – the stunning mix of natural beauty, vibrant wildlife, traditional Goan roots and a slower pace of life. It’s the latter that we find the most intriguing about Chorao Island.
When compared to the hustle and bustle of Panjim and the nearby places, with their beaches and nightlife, Chorao Island is where you come to drop all that, embrace the minimal and really soak in all the nature that’s around you.
The silence here is beautiful.
One can reach Chorao Island by taking the ferry from Ribandar. The ferry ride is a very simple yet exciting one. If you have a four-wheeler with you, you will only need to pay INR 10 for the vehicle only. For people and two-wheelers, the ferry ride is free of cost. The 10-minute ferry ride on the Mandovi River takes you through the lush mangroves. Feel free to climb the stairs up to the observation deck on the ferry. It will not give you a bird’s eye view of the place but it’s just a fun thing to do.
Most people visiting Goa tend to hire either a car or a scooty to go around town. If you are on a scooty, you are going to love the ride on this island. Yes, the roads are narrow, but they are also pretty isolated and quiet. But that, in no way, means that you will throw caution to the wind. Ride slowly and enjoy the scenery and the greenery, these are things that are so hard to come by these days, especially for those outstation visitors.
You will be passing through small villages on the way, and these are some of the best ways to experience the traditions and culture of the locals.
Scattered along the way are also small local eateries where they serve traditional Goan cuisine. At these eateries, you will find from hot cups of tea and plates of fried veggie fritters to delectable local seafood items.

When in Chorao, take some time out to explore some more. Just an hour and a half away inland is Goa's hinterlands. Chorla Ghats is where one gets to experience the best of the Western Ghats in Goa. From Arvalem Falls and Pandava Caves to the ancient Tambdi Surla Temple and Dudhsagar Waterfalls, these jewels of the Chorla Ghats are great addition to your Chorao Island itinerary. Read More
