West Indies captain Roston Chase has described his side's shocking collapse against Australia in Jamaica as both "heartbreaking" and "embarrassing", following one of the lowest totals ever recorded in Test cricket.
In a crushing defeat at Sabina Park, the West Indies were bowled out for just 27 runs in their second innings, handing Australia a 3-0 series whitewash. It was the second-lowest total in Test history and the lowest ever by a West Indies team, surpassing their previous mark of 47. It also marked the first time any team has recorded seven ducks in a single Test innings.
Chasing a modest target of 204 on the third day of the final Test, the home side lasted just 14.3 overs. Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc tore through the batting order, taking five wickets in only 15 balls - the fastest five-wicket haul in Test history.
Speaking after the match, Chase was visibly downcast. "It's disappointing," he said. "We've been putting ourselves in positions to win games, and then we just lay down and don't put up a fight in the last batting innings. It's quite heartbreaking, because I think we did it in all three Tests, and we're not really learning from our mistakes."
Chase, who recently took on the captaincy, didn't shy away from the team's poor display. "Obviously, being bowled out for less than 30 is quite embarrassing," he admitted. Despite the historic low score, Chase believed the target of 204 was within reach and refused to blame pitch conditions. "I thought it was realistic," he said. "The wicket was still a good batting wicket. I didn't think there were too many devils in the pitch like the last two games. We thought 204 was gettable. But then, obviously, with the start we had - 11 for 6 or something like that - it's very difficult to get those runs from there."
It was a miserable series overall for the West Indies' new-look batting line-up. Across six innings in three Tests, they managed scores of 190, 141, 253, 143, 143, and 27.
